Psychotherapy General Session
$150 (45 min)
Psychotherapy is often helpful to people who want to grow and enrich their lives, as well as to people who are in distress. Psychotherapy goals can include experiencing some relief from a variety of mental health and wellness problems, gaining understanding into your personality, and improving relationships. Many people who participate in psychotherapy feel that the experience has helped them in some way. However, there are no guarantees of this. Some of the qualities that will increase the helpfulness of our services are a willingness to be honest with yourself and your psychotherapist, a desire and strong motivation to improve some part of your life, and active participation in the psychotherapy process. Some risks do exist in psychotherapy. You may feel considerable emotional discomfort at some point during the process (for example, you may feel sad when you share with your therapist about a recent loss). Emotions that clients sometimes feel include anger, sadness, and anxiety. When working on relational problems, you may feel some discomfort about or towards other people. It is also possible that therapy may not work for you, and in rare cases, problems may get worse. Having said this, many people feel that therapy are worth the potential risks, and many people benefit from treatment. For the first session or first few sessions, you can expect that an evaluation of the problems that brought you into our office will be conducted. After this initial assessment, you will be provided with initial impressions of the kind of treatment that would likely be indicated for you. During this initial evaluation, you should also be thinking about your level of comfort with your psychotherapist. Because our services may require a substantial commitment in terms of time, energy, and financial resources from you, it is important that you feel comfortable with the professional that you choose. If you decide that you are not comfortable and if you decide to end treatment, you are strongly encouraged to talk with your psychotherapist about it first. If, at any time, you wish to discontinue services, you can do so.In such a scenario, your psychotherapist can provide you with referrals to other practitioners and they will take some additional time to facilitate a smooth transition of care to maximize the possibility of a continuation towards reaching your goal. Also, clients often wonder how long therapy will take, and how frequently they will need to come. Different types of problems require different durations and frequencies of intervention. After the initial evaluation, you can be provided with a rough estimate of both.
Psychotherapy EMDR Session
$150 (45 min)
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Reprocessing Desensitization, and it is an evidenced-based practice that helps relieve trauma stored in the mind and body from previous experiences that may be currently impacting you. EMDR is described like this: "No one knows how any form of psychotherapy works neurobiologically or in the brain. However, we do know that when a person is very upset, their brain cannot process information as it does ordinarily. One moment becomes ‘frozen in time,’ and remembering a trauma may feel as bad as going through it the first time…” (EMDRIA.ORG). Many people are great candidates for EMDR psychotherapy. Those with a diagnosable condition that include symptoms of trauma (such as PTSD, a.k.a. posttraumatic stress disorder) often respond very well to EMDR and report they reprocess their experiences of trauma approximately two-fold more directly and rapidly than traditional talk or supportive therapy. Moreover, most EMDR therapists agree that this treatment modality is excellent at finding root causes of general anxiety and depressed mood and at helping clients of all background and varying presenting concerns with improving their mood and reducing emotional disturbances. EMDR clients often say it helps them let go of negative beliefs about themselves when they feel triggered, and to find a way to move forward from their root causes of getting emotionally stuck and finally experience long lasting emotional wellness. Finally, experiences of “images, sounds, smells, and feelings… [can create] lasting negative effects that interferes with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate to other people. EMDR seems to have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information. Normal information processing is resumed, so following a successful EMDR session, a person no longer relives the images, sounds, and feelings when the event is brought to mind. You still remember what happened, but it is less upsetting… Therefore, EMDR can be thought of as a physiologically based therapy that helps a person see disturbing material in a new and less distressing way." (EMDRIA.ORG)
